Westering High School opened in 1970 with 178 pupils under the principalship of Mr P A Blackbeard. In 1991 Mr Lionel Heath took over as principal. In 1997 Mr Ken Ball took over as principal. In 2002 Mr Stuart Hayward was appointed as principal, with a pupil enrolment of 900 pupils. We proudly celebrated our 40th anniversary in 2010. Currently the school has a learner enrolment of 1000.
We encourage active pupil participation in all spheres of school life and our school vision “WHS: an educational adventure” is evident in our great depth in sporting and cultural participation and our successes in all spheres of school life. We are exceptionally proud of our excellent academic results.
Our hockey / cricket and rugby fields have been named after sporting giants in the history of our school. The Gavin Akers Rugby Field was inaugurated in 1986 in memory of the deputy principal who is regarded as the father of rugby at the school. The Lionel Heath Hockey and Cricket Fields give recognition to one of our principals who contributed hugely to establishing our school in the hockey area. In 2014 the school officially opened our hockey Astro Turf and in January 2018 we proudly named this facility The Bruce Abrey Astro Turf to honour his 36 years of service to the school. 20 of these years Mr Abrey served as Deputy Principal.
In 2018 we also proudly named our E-Media Centre The Cindy Harris E-Media Centre in recognition of her role as Deputy Principal and her contribution to e-learning at our school.
We are very proud of all the SA representatives (both currently at school and old scholars) who have represented our school at national and international competitions (see our honours boards in the PA Blackbeard Hall and the K R Ball Sports Centre). We are also very proud to have undertaken our first international sports tour in 2006. The first XV Rugby and Girls’ Hockey team toured Argentina in June / July 2006. This was followed by a tour to the United Kingdom by our 1st Boys’ Hockey and 1st Girls’ Netball teams in April 2008.
Westering High School has achieved greatly in all spheres because we firmly support our ethos and mission “to educate the whole child to reach full potential and to play a meaningful role in society”.
