The hopes of Glenwood High School’s young debaters were dashed this week after they were placed second in the Durban Coastal Debating League’s interschool competition. The contest – held at Clifton School on Tuesday – saw Glenwood’s Junior team (consisting of learners in Grades 9 and 10) and its Grade 8 complement competing to become the province’s champion debaters.
Glenwood’s teams competed against hosts, Clifton School. Rounds of elimination for the competition – involving high schools across the province – began early in the school year, culminating in the finals.
One of the teachers working closely with and training the participants, Mr Sookdeo, said that during the long journey he had seen their confidence and analytical abilities grow.
Senior debater and Grade 12 learner Dylan Gouws – who had been present at the event to lend his support – said the competition often drew from current events, growing in complexity according to different age and grade categories.
He said that he was proud of the teams’ efforts, despite the outcome.
