Glenwood High School welcomed Michaelhouse to Durban on Saturday the 5th of October for a 50 Over match on Dixon’s Oval. The men from the midlands won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like to be a good batting surface.
Glenwood welcomed back injured captain and opening bowler Jordan Hendrikse after missing the start of the season through recovering from a quad tear sustained from his time playing SA Schools’ rugby in the June/July Holidays.
Glenwood started well with the ball, building good pressure and it was Hendrikse who made the breakthrough, nicking off opening batsman Porrill to wicket keeper De Klerk for 14 runs. At the other end Meiring started a counter attack of his own, latching onto any bad bowling and hitting boundaries with ease. After establishing a partnership of 41 runs, and Glenwood attempting to squeeze Meiring who sat on 49 runs to not allow an easy 50 milestones, Glenwood managed to take his wicket as Meiring nicked a Thabiso Shangase delivery to Matt Halstead at first slip, leaving Meiring one run short of his 50.
Michaelhouse went into tea at 88 for 2 after 25 overs, Glenwood managing to get themselves back into the game after dismissing quick-scoring Meiring.
The tea break worked in Glenwood’s favour as they got their third wicket in the first over back, Rasen Naidoo trapping Fisher LBW. Glenwood controlled the run rate from then on with Michaelhouse trying to assert themselves again. Batsmen Stringer and Rebeck built a partnership of 47 runs however both set batsman were dismissed in a space of two overs with the team score on 137/4 and 138/5 respectively.
Michaelhouse ending their innings on 176/8 after their 50 overs.
Following the lunch break, Glenwood openers Francis Moran and Yastri Naidoo made their way out to the middle to begin Glenwood’s chase.
Moran got the chase off to the best possible start as he hit three boundaries in the first over from seamer Nel. Michaelhouse immediately got back into the game dismissing Naidoo who nicked a full delivery from Morgan to wicketkeeper Rebeck in the second over. Moran was then next to go in the third over having not adding to his tally of 12, having been adjudged to have hit a Nel delivery that went through to keeper Rebeck once again. The decision not welcomed by the Glenwood batsman.
Chad Laycock and Matt Halstead of Glenwood then walked out and seemed to be in a hurry, both batsman dismissing the Michaelhouse bowlers to the boundary at will. The Glenwood batsmen scoring at a rate of 10 runs per over during the power-play. Laycock was the next man to be given out LBW, having hit 6 boundaries in his score of 31. SJ de Klerk joined Halstead and they put on a partnership of 58 runs, as the Green Machine continued to showcase an exceptional display of boundary hitting, with the Michaelhouse bowlers unable to contain the fire-power of the Glenwood middle-order.
Halstead’s entertaining performance was finally ended by Fleming, having caught the batsman off his own bowling. Halstead finishing having raised his bat scoring 53 off 49 balls.
De Klerk was not to be out done by his peers, scoring his own 50 off 40 balls, and hitting the winning runs with a boundary in the 24th over to end not out and achieve his half-century.
Glenwood winning the match by 6 wickets.
The Glenwood boys showing a dominant performance with the bat, following their well planned and executed bowling innings. A close to complete showing from the boys in green.
