Football vs Michaelhouse – St Charles College

Football vs Michaelhouse.Grit and Sportsmanship Shine in Season Opener: St Charles vs Michaelhouse.

St Charles College launched their spring football season in style with a spirited clash against rivals Michaelhouse on the scenic Harwin field this past Saturday. Under pristine skies and perfect playing conditions, both teams were eager to make their mark. The boys in Blue & Gold wasted no time setting the tempo.

From the outset, St Charles surged forward with confidence. Their early dominance was highlighted by a thunderous free kick from Covhan Baatjies. It was taken from nearly 30 metres out, which cannoned off the crossbar and had the crowd gasping. Minutes later, Gubhuza Mlambo’s slick footwork in the box drew contact from a Michaelhouse defender, but play was waved on.

Despite the early pressure, Michaelhouse found their rhythm. They responded with composed interplay and crafted a few promising chances of their own. However, the first half concluded with both teams deadlocked in a goalless draw.

Momentum swung again in the second half, this time in Michaelhouse’s favour. They pressed hard during the opening minutes, threatening the scoreline—only to be denied by an outstanding one-on-one save from St Charles goalkeeper Thandolwethu Zama, whose reflexes kept his side in the game.

As the match wore on, the intensity of the first half began to show, and both teams settled into a more measured pace. When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard remained untouched, but the day was anything but uneventful.

This fierce yet respectful encounter ended in a well-earned stalemate, with players exchanging handshakes and quiet congratulations—an embodiment of football’s spirit and camaraderie.
