Eunice Hockey. Eunice High School, Bloemfontein is proud of Mrs Louise van der Merwe. She received a National Award at the recent SASHOC AGM.
She received this wonderful award as a stalwart of Free State Schools Hockey. Also for her long-running contributions to the game of hockey at provincial and national levels. The Federation took the opportunity to reward fifteen individuals for their long-running contributions to the game of hockey at school level.
More about Mrs van der Merwe:
• Her career at Eunice started on 1 April 2006. “That morning I stepped onto the bus with the 1st Hockey team to take part in the St Mary’s and St Stithians Festivals.”
• She coached the 1st Hockey team in 2011 and 2012. The team won the All Girls’ Festival, the Motheo league, and Free State Cup. “We also were runners-up in the Cape Town International Festival. We unfortunately lost against a club team from the Netherlands in a penalty shootout.”
• Currently she is the Head of Hockey at Eunice, and Chairperson of Southern Free State High Schools Hockey.
• “I started playing hockey in Gr.8 and went on to represent different provincial teams.” She enjoyed playing forward and was a great goal scorer.
• She served on the National Committee for six years and was Convenor of Selectors of the U16 and U18 National Girls’ teams for ten years.
• Mrs Van der Merwe received a President’s Award in 1999 for outstanding service to hockey after the tragic accident in which the SFS U18 Hockey team was involved and two of the players passed away. “I was the Chairperson of Free State High Schools hockey at the time.”
• She received the Award for Meritorious service to hockey on provincial and national level (2022)
Vision
Her vision for Eunice Hockey in 2023: “To create an environment in which all hockey players will just really enjoy it. That Eunice players will play, not necessarily to achieve, but to enjoy spending time exercising, competing and just be with their teammates. For our top teams to achieve top positions in all the events they participate in.”
