Eco-Club River Clean-Up. The Curro Durbanville High School Eco-Club joined the Wildflower Stepping Stones project on the Eco-Club River Clean-Up along the Elsieskraal River Clean-up on Saturday, 11 March.
The Wildflower Stepping Stones team focuses on educating communities about the locally endangered Renosterveld. It forms part of our cherished fynbos family. Part of their work is to re-establish pockets of the Renosterveld within Durbanville. It requires maintenance from volunteers to increase its success. Students from various grades first removed litter along the riverbanks of the Elsieskraal River. They collected items ranging from high heels to cordless telephones. They were then divided into different teams who either removed and poisoned invasive poplar trees along the river or maintained the indigenous growth of the apt name Butterfly Haven Garden.
The Eco-Club will continue working with the Wildflower Stepping Stones project this year.
As students volunteer their time, they will gain exposure to the local plant diversity and will hopefully, one day, become custodians of our natural, local heritage.
