St Charles College Grade 11 student, Sebastian Ridge, has been selected as part of the Senior Debating Squad to represent Pietermaritzburg at the KwaZulu-Natal Debating Championship. The championship takes place from Friday, 30 July to Sunday, 1 August.
The Senior squad consists of only the top 19 speakers in the Pietermaritzburg Debating League (PMBDL). They are selected based on their performance across five rounds of league debating.
Leading up to the tournament, Sebastian will be involved in an intense practice schedule involving weekly training debates and content sessions.
The actual tournament itself is rigorous, with a minimum of five rounds of debating across three days between the top leagues in the province. These leagues are the Durban Coastal Debating League (DCDL) and Phoenix Debating League (PDL).
Debating in KwaZulu-Natal is run by the KwaZulu-Natal Schools Debating Association (KZNSDA). Schools participate in one of five leagues: Durban Coastal Debating League (DCDL), Midlands, Phoenix, Pietermaritzburg and South Coast. As well as competing in these leagues, schools and speakers also participate in inter-league tournaments during the year. The top speakers from the regional leagues progress to the provincial championships.
St Charles wishes Sebastian all the best in the coming weeks as he continues to make SCC Debating proud!
– Mr Travis McCabe (Head Debating Coach)
