Tsholofelo, how do you see your role as head leader of Curro Thatchfield High School?
I see my role as one who inspires, encourages, loves easily, and learns easily too, but that’s a given. I am the one who has to be willing to make the tough and painful decisions on behalf of the majority. While having to navigate this crazy world of ours and its many challenges, I must remain true to myself and in turn earn the respect of other brilliant leaders in the school.
Do you think the measures taken by the government in respect of Covid-19 for schools are justified?
Yes, definitely. Education is of absolute importance, but not to the extent where it takes priority over one’s life and keeping one protected.
Who do you look to for inspiration and mentorship?
My parents. Every day is a new learning experience with them around. Not always one I quite enjoy or agree with, but they definitely got me to this point and have played the biggest role in the person I am today. They have also shaped the type of person I’ll continue to be. So, yes, every day is quite the learning experience for me, and I couldn’t ask for better sources of inspiration.
Which field of study do you intend pursuing after school?
Law. A great pay cheque aside, there’s a whole world out there that I wish to explore through law. So many powerless people out there waiting for people like me to empower them once again and even out the playing field. In order to play the game (and win too), I need to learn the game and master the rule book.
Do you think that South African schools offer you sufficient opportunities for the field of study you intend to pursue? Why?
No, unfortunately not. There aren’t enough opportunities for teens my age to get the exposure and experiences we need to understand the essentials of law. Sadly, most of us depend on our favourite Netflix series to bring us answers to questions our schooling system fails to provide.
Do you think participation in sport should be made compulsory in schools?
No, I do not. Each to their own. Whether it be feeding the mind, soul, or body. Sports, culture, academics etc. Every student should be allowed to voluntarily participate and excel in whatever lies at the centre of their hearts, souls and identities.
What did you enjoy most during your school career?
The different personalities you come across and the beautiful blends between them. (I live for it.)
Are you 100% sure of the field of study you contemplate pursuing after school? Please explain your answer.
No, not entirely. I sometimes fear that I enjoy the idea and aesthetic behind pursuing law, instead of the work itself. I sometimes fear that I’m making the wrong choice, as I’m still slowly-but-surely getting to know and understand who I am. Who is Tsholofelo? What matters to her? And how she can matter to the world?
Which University will you attend ?
Somewhere close to home. The University of Pretoria after I complete Grade 12. (God-willing)
