Curro Serengeti. It is a priviledge for Schools That Rock to ask a few questions to Ntobeko Mbele, Head Girl of 2022, from Curro Serengeti, Kempton Park, Gauteng.

Ntobeko, how do you see your role as head leader of Curro Serengeti?

My role as Head Girl of Curro Serengeti is to represent the voice of the students. I also see this role as a platform to encourage a space where we can all learn from one another as well as empower each other.

Do you think the measures taken by the government in respect of Covid-19 for schools are justified?

Every COVID-19 measure such as lockdown, social distancing, regular sanitisation and temperature checking in schools are effective, and are implemented by the government purely for the safety of the learners, teachers and their families.

Who do you look to for inspiration and mentorship?

My mom is my superhero who has inspired me in many ways and motivated me to always set the bar high.

Which field of study do you intend pursuing after school?

Criminology.

Do you think that South African schools offer you sufficient opportunities for the field of study you intend to pursue?

The subjects offered by majority of South African schools are very mainstream and broad. I haven’t come across a school that offers opportunities in the criminology field. I think the reason for that is because there isn’t a high demand for the field amongst learners.

Do you think participation in sport should be made compulsory in schools?

I don’t think that sports should be made compulsory in schools simply because we are all different individuals. The same way that we are given the freedom to choose subjects that are in our best interests in the FET phase, should be the same way we should have the option to choose whether we want to participate in sport.

What did you enjoy most during your school career?

I enjoyed the school events such as my Grade 8 orientation, interhigh, night school, house plays etc. because those were the times where my favourite memories were created with my friends and teachers.

Are you 100% sure of the field of study you contemplate pursuing after school? Please explain your answer.

I’m not 100% certain, since my interests keep changing as I grow older. However, I have always found the study of everything criminology fascinating, and I do believe it is a field I would flourish in.

Which University will you attend next year?

University of Pretoria or University of Cape Town.
