Curro Helderwyk. In our series on schools’ head leaders for 2023 Schools That Rock chat to Thabang Nkambule. Thabang, Head Boy of Curro Helderwyk High School for 2023, tells us more about himself and his leadership.
In all honesty, I am a very complex person whom one cannot pit in a certain box and say this is who I am. I am a person who finds happiness in knowing that my actions have benefited someone in a positive way. When it comes to leadership, I have come to learn that the best way to lead is from the back and the front. This is so that I can walk the journey first and give advice to those that walk after me. Nevertheless, I also walk the journey last in order to pick others up when they fall on this long journey called teamwork.
My personal goals for Curro Helderwyk next year is to hopefully get cultural and sports colours and increase my academic marks. I also hope to make a positive impact on someone’s life.
My goals for Curro Helderwyk during my term of service is to hopefully inspire the change that I want to be in all the learners within the school. I also want to uplift Curro Helderwyk and bring it to higher heights.
Biggest challenges
I would say that the biggest challenges, or challenge rather, that I experienced as a learner at Curro Helderwyk, is the challenge of getting over rumours and remembering that I am an individual that is not made up of any rumours.
What stands out most to me at Curro Helderwyk, is the diversity within the school. The fact that there are different people who see things differently and do things differently, that stands out for me.
So funny enough, I actually look at the people around me for inspiration and mentorship. These people include my family and friends. Sometimes it could even be a random person who I saw doing something good. Then I would use that as inspiration for my next actions.
Should I be a kitchen article, I think I would be a stand mixer. This is because I like to mix and join people together with the hope of them making a great difference in each other’s lives.
My friends would describe me as a very outspoken person who knows what they want and is also fun at the same time.
What motivates me to achieve my goals, is fear. It motivates me to achieve my goals more than anything out there.
Joining Curro Helderwyk
I would advise learners to also become part of my school because they would be able to learn more about themselves. They will also be able to interact with different personalities. Plus who wouldn’t want to become part of Curro Helderberg?
My favourite teacher is Mrs Manzungu. She is like a mother to me and others in the school. There is this warmth that comes with being in her class. She makes me feel at home while I’m at school.
My future goals? In the future I hope to become an advanced culinary chef who owns a large range of restaurants all over the world. Along with this, being a corporate lawyer.
