Curro Cup. Instead of spending their September school holidays sitting idle in front of digital screens, Curro learners got the chance to up their adrenaline and enjoy some friendly heart-pumping competition during an action-packed sporting extravaganza as part of the Curro Cup.
The holidays kicked off with a fantastic inter-school Tennis Tournament hosted by Curro Sport. It was held between Friday, 23 and Friday and 30 September 2022. More than 110 keen tennis players from various Curro primary and high school learners participated in the seven-day event. It was held at the breathtaking Sun City Resort.
Curro Hazeldean was in top form throughout. They came out first in both the primary boys’ and girls’ categories as well as the high school girls tournament. Curro Hillcrest was triumphant in the high school boys tournament. Kaitlyn Ramduth and James Edley won both individual trophies in the under 19 girls’ and boys’ singles titles respectively.
Randburg based Curro Aurora’s national inter-school Curro Cup 2022 Swimming Gala took place between Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 September. It was also a splashing success.
Waterstone College
The high-performance gala was held at Waterstone College in Gauteng. More than 170 keen swimmers from 11 Curro primary and high schools plunged into the deep end. They competed in one of 48 events during the two days. Curro Woodhill College swimmers were overall winners in the primary school category. Curro Hazeldean’s swimmers was teh winners for the high school.
Michael Brady from Curro Rivonia (under 13), Christiaan Kriegler from Curro Durbanville (under 19), Abigail Wilcocks from Curro Woodhill College (under 13) and Leah Christi from Curro Durbanville (under 19) were awarded the Skins Award for swimming the best in their respective age groups.
Curro Sports brought the holidays to a close, with more than 150 learners and teachers taking part in the Minecraft Build Battles. They Captured the Flag games as part of the Curro Cup Minecraft. It was held between Thursday, 29 September and Saturday, 1 October.
A further fifty learners from 13 Curro schools took part in the Rocket league. 36 Players from 9 Curro schools took part in the Apex league of the Curro Cup Traditional eSports between Thursday, 6 and Saturday, 8 October.
Curro Hermanus
Both online platforms were specially designed by Acer for Curro and had Shakey, a distinguished eSports player, South African shoutcaster and Curro Hermanus alumni, on hand to shoutcast some of the games. Roux Pretorius a grade seven learner from Curro Krugersdorp primary school, who attended all Shakey’s shoutcasting workshops last term, also go to shoutcast some of the eSports matches.

I am so impressed at the huge turnout, especially as these events were held during the school holidays. The Curro Cup, an inter-school sports challenge, spans across 12 sporting codes including athletics, soccer, rugby, netball, hockey, golf, and mountain biking and aims to identify the independent school group’s best sport stars and teams. Winners of the Curro Cup events are given a step up in the competitive world of school sports.
