Chrystelle Lauren qualified for Tournament of Champions Round

Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School Grade 8 pupil, Chrystelle Lauren Harrichand, has qualified for the Tournament of Champions Round at Yale University. This will be first time Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School will be representation at this International Academics Event.

Chrystelle took part in the Global Round of the World Scholars’ Cup which was hosted in Cape Town for five days in mid-August with over 500 students from 32 countries. She won seven medals and came fourth overall in the event.

The World Scholars’ Cup is an International foundation that started in 2007, based in Los Angeles, California was founded by Daniel Berdichevsky.  This year’s theme was an “Unlikely World”.  Berdichevsky said that the competition brings together over 20 000 learners from 50 countries across the globe and the Cape Town Competition was the 108th round for this year, however Cape Town is the sixth South African City to host the competition during the 10th Year Anniversary of the World Scholars Cup.

Teams consisting of 3 members participated in Team Debates, Collaborative Writing, Scholars Challenge & Scholars Bowl.  Topics of exploration, from Moonshot Technology & the History of Conspiracy to the Science and Art of prediction was drawn from the theme.

Two other global rounds were held in Hanoi and Athens.  The top qualifying teams from these three rounds will participate in the Tournament of Champions at Yale University in the United States of America. – Supplied
