Centenary Book. Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School was thrilled to host the launch of their long-awaited Centenary Book on 24 July. The title of the book is ‘Cheerfulness with Industry 1920 – 2020’.
The project began in 2018, when Gareth Thomson (former History teacher at GHS) was tasked with writing the book. This was one of the major GHS Centenary projects. At the time, no one could have foreseen the arrival of COVID-19 and its concomitant global disruption. Understandably, all the major school projects had to be put on hold. As soon as it was possible to continue, Sally Howes and Val Fowler embarked on the creative aspect of the book. They sourced photographs and pictorial records of GHS, designed the layout, and edited Gareth’s excellent manuscript.
This beautiful, hard-covered coffee-table edition of ‘Cheerfulness with Industry 1920 – 2020’ records the first 100 years of the history. Furthermore it records achievements and legendary personalities of GHS. This book is indeed the result of years of teamwork and commitment and is a fitting tribute to this excellent institution.
The cost of the book is R450 (excluding shipping) and is also available from the GHS Finance Office, email bursar@ghspmb.co.za or via our website: www.ghspmb.co.za
