Camps Bay Fun Run. HOKA Supports Young Runners as Camps Bay High Builds Community Through Sport.
Camps Bay High School recently hosted a vibrant Fun Run in Camps Bay. The school welcomes young athletes from Langa Athletics Club, Zimasa Community School, and Gugulethu Athletics Club. The event marked the rapid growth of the school’s newly established running club. It also celebrated the power of sport to unite communities.
A highlight of the day was the generous donation of approximately 100 pairs of running shoes. It includes specialist track spikes, valued at an estimated R250,000. Sponsored by HOKA and facilitated by Run Norway, the donation benefited athletes from Camps Bay High as well as runners from Langa and Gugulethu. It gives many young athletes access to proper footwear for training and competition.
“Running has the power to open doors and build confidence in young people,” said Busi Ngcwama. “This Fun Run was about more than just a race. It was about connection, opportunity, and showing our learners what dedication and perseverance look like. Camps Bay High School is incredibly grateful for partnerships like this that allow all our athletes, and those from neighbouring communities, to feel supported and inspired.”
Importance of equipping young runners
Speaking on behalf of HOKA, Camilla Bernal emphasised the importance of equipping young runners. “We were very happy to include spikes for the track runners in this donation. We saw a real need for that when we visited last year. Having proper running shoes is the most important tool for any athlete. We truly hope these shoes will give young runners – from Camps Bay, Langa and Gugulethu – the confidence and support they need both mentally and physically.”
Bernal added that the initiative reflects a long-standing connection between HOKA’s Nordic distributor, Run Norway, and the Cape Town community. “Our family has been affiliated with Camps Bay High School for many years. We were especially pleased to help young runners from different parts of Cape Town through this Fun Run, and we hope to continue supporting even more children to reach their running potential in the weeks to come.”
The school extended heartfelt thanks to Ms Juliah Mabaya, Manager of the Camps Bay High Running Club, Mr Kundi Mokombwe, the club’s coach, and volunteer parents Mrs Tanya Goddard and Mr Barry Tyson, who coached and ran alongside the learners. Appreciation also went to parents who donated food for all participants to enjoy after the Fun Run. “A big thank you to them – we want to keep building this relationship with these clubs; they are such inspiring, dedicated runners,” said Ngcwama.
Camps Bay High School looks forward to strengthening ties with running clubs from Langa and Gugulethu and to creating more opportunities for young athletes to grow, compete, and be inspired through the sport of running.
