Basketball. Kearsney College’s 1st basketball team went down 88–98 to Northwood in their fourth fixture of the term, played in front of a packed Skweyiya SportZone. The clash had all the makings of a David-and-Goliath encounter, with Kearsney facing a side ranked third nationally and brimming with talent. Northwood, dominant in recent years, arrived with a reputation to uphold.
Match Summary
- Fast Start: In sweltering conditions, Kearsney came out firing, racing to a 7–1 lead. But defensive fouls allowed Northwood to claw back, converting 12 points from the line. The visitors edged ahead 20–17 by the end of the first quarter.
- Halftime Battle: Kearsney fought hard to stay in touch, but Northwood consistently found gaps in the zone defense. By halftime, Northwood led 45–38, looking sharp on offense.
- Third Quarter Surge: Kearsney produced their best basketball in the third quarter, scoring 28 points. Each time they threatened to close the gap, however, Northwood responded with mini-runs to restore their cushion. Heading into the final quarter, Kearsney trailed 64–75.
- Final Push: Despite spirited play and winning the fourth quarter 24–23, Kearsney never got closer than six points. The final whistle confirmed a 98–88 victory for Northwood, though Kearsney’s resilience nearly delivered the upset of the season.
