SA Mathematics Team Competition. The SA Mathematics Team Competition, sponsored by the Actuarial Society of South Africa, has been an annual event since 1990.
The competition comprises 25 questions over two papers. The first is answered separately by each team member, with everyone’s individual score contributing to the final team mark. The second paper is answered as a team and requires strategic collaboration, drawing on the combined strengths of the team members. Each team comprises ten pupils drawn from the surrounding area. St Andrew’s College, Grahamstown, DSG and Kingswood joined forces to enter a Junior and Senior team this year.
Despite some incredibly tough questions, the mathematical engagement generated by the problems made for an enjoyable and valuable experience. Both teams achieved commendable rankings – the Juniors were placed 16th out of 43 teams nationally, while the Senior team was placed 8th out of 42 teams. – Dr Duncan Samson, Director of Mathematics.
