Rugby Captain – Meet Rele Sekhukhune from Curro Roodeplaat

Rugby Captain. In our popular series about sports captains, Schools That Rock today talks to Rele Sekhukhune. Rele is the Rugby Captain of Curro Roodeplaat, Kameeldrift, Pretoria,1st Rugby team. He scores the Sixth try in our series this year on Rugby Captains from high schools in South Africa and Namibia.

“I started playing rugby at the age of 11 years. I like playing rugby because of the big hits, scoring tries, watching new players turn into springboks and try to become a Blue Bulls player.

When I played my first game, I felt scared because the other team’s players were big and fast. What I remember about my first game, is that I was too scared to run with the ball or to make tackles.

Beginners

My advice to beginners is, don’t be scared! Make your tackles and run hard and straight with the ball.

The first time I was elected as Rugby Captain, Is this year, 2024. The first time I jogged onto the field as Rugby Captain, I felt powerful and also like a leader. To keep my team motivated during a game – even when things aren’t going well – I tell them that they can do better. They must believe in themselves and that we can work together to fix the mistake.

The thing that inspires me every time I jog on the rugby field for playing a match, is our school and our supporters. They always support us and they never give up on us.

The match I played which was most fun, was the game against Curro Academy Pretoria. The fun part was because all of us are friends and it felt like playing with your brothers. The game I want to forget soon was the game against Kameeldrift. The reason is because I wasn’t playing to my best ability.

Seeking advice

When I had a tough game, I seek help and advice from my coaches. I also watch videos on how to improve my play and leadership.

My greatest rugby hero is Aphiwe Dyantyi, a South African professional Rugby Union player. He is very fast and strong as a winger.

My personal rugby goal I would like to achieve, is making it into the Blue Bulls team. My biggest single highlight of my rugby career so far was being called up for the Blue Bulls trails and making it through the first 2 rounds. I am still taking part in the trials. The other sport I like to play, is soccer.

Should I be lucky to have coffee with professional rugby players. it will be Cheslin Kolbe and Siya Kholisi.”
