Rip Curl SA. Grade 8 student Ben Esterhuyse from Camps Bay High School showcased his exceptional surfing talent at the Third Rip Curl GromSearch Surf Event. It was held this past weekend at Nahoon Point in East London. Ben dominated the competition, securing the U14 Boys Title with ease. Competing against the nation’s top U14 surfers, Ben’s performance solidifies his standing as the No. 1 ranked U14 Boy on the 2024 SAST Junior Tour.
The Rip Curl GromSearch series began as a one-day event in Victoria Australia in 1999. Along with, It has evolved into a global series designed specifically for surfers aged 16 and under, known as ‘grommets’. This prestigious event has also been a launchpad for many of today’s top surfers. Included are Men’s WSL athletes like Jordy Smith and Gabriel Medina. Impressively, four of the top five surfers in the 2021 WSL Finals were former GromSearch finalists, along with 20 of the 34 athletes on the men’s World Tour.
Busi Ngcwama, Head of Sport at Camps Bay High School, also expressed the school’s pride in Ben’s achievements: “We are incredibly proud of Ben’s outstanding performance at the Rip Curl GromSearch. His dedication and passion have set him on a path to greatness, following in the footsteps of many prestigious surfers who began their careers at this event. We have no doubt that Ben will also continue to achieve remarkable success in the world of surfing.”
