National Athletic Championships. Curro Hazeldean smashed a record this weekend by taking home a total of 17 medals at the ASA National Championships. It was held at held at the Msunduzi Athletics Stadium in Pietermaritzburg. This achievement is the highest number of medals ever won by a Curro school.
Twenty of the school’s most talented athletes were chosen to represent Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) at the ASA National Championship. Each athlete put on an outstanding performance, proving that as a school, they have grown on all levels of their sport.
Skills and talent
Displaying exceptional skills and talent throughout the competition, the smaller than average sports performing school from Pretoria earned six gold medals. Furthermore they earned eight silver medals and one bronze medal. They showcased their ability to excel in a variety of track and field events, including sprinting, middle distance, hurdles, and long jump.
Special mention goes to grade seven learner Tiisetso Malungane who was selected to represent Gauteng at the Primary Schools National Athletics Championships. This athlete achieved a bronze medal in the 1500m as well as a silver medal in the 800m.
Matodz Ndou, (U18), together with Kamohelo Ramatsebe, (U20) Sandiso Jekem (U18) and Paballo Radebe (U20) were also chosen to represent South Africa at the African Games. It will take place in Lusaka, Zambia from Saturday, 29 April to Wednesday, 3 May 2023.
Executive Head Pierre le Roux
Curro Hazeldean Executive Head Pierre le Roux shared his joy and congratulations with the team, commenting, “I am incredibly proud of our athletes and their outstanding achievements at the South Africa National Championships. Each of them competed against some of the toughest opponents. Along with, their dedication, hard work and determination paid off. Their impressive success is a significant milestone for our school. It is also a testament to our continued commitment to sporting excellence. Huge congratulations to all the athletes and their coaches.”

- Kamohelo Ramatsebe (U20) of Curro Hazeldean received a Gold Medal for his 3000M Steeplechase at the National Athletics Championships
- Paballo Radebe (U20) of Curro Hazeldean received Gold Medal for her win in the 800m event at the National Athletics Championships
- Matodz Ndou (U18) of Curro Hazeldean received a Gold Medal for his win in the 400m Hurdles event at the National Athletics Championships
- Sandiso Jekem (U18) of Curro Hazeldean celebrates his Gold Medal in the Triple Jump event at the National Athletics Championships
