Filmit Shop Talk. Paul Roos Gymnasium hosted the first Filmit Shop Talk Sessions on Saturday, 28 May. Although Filmit Festival’s Shop Talk Sessions are hosted for the 2022 finalists of the Filmit Festival, it is also open to high school learners from the Western Cape who have an interest in filmmaking. Filmit Finalists (2022) attend these sessions free of charge. Other interested learners can also attend by purchasing a ticket (R100 per session).
On Saturday, 28 May, almost 30 learners from Paarl, Ceres, Worcester, Kylemore, Durbanville and Stellenbosch attended three talks. The talks were on producing, production management, pitching your film to producers, and production design (set, wardrobe and makeup). Industry specialists presented these Shop Talk Sessions with immense passion and much generosity. Lynne-Anne Vosloo is the CEO at Moonlighting Films. Uga Carlini is the producer, director and screenwriter at Towerkop Creations. Christian Joubert is a production designer. Marné van der Burgh is a wardrobe designer and Louiza Calore is a makeup and hairstylist. Learners also embraced the opportunity to engage in interesting conversation with these professionals.
Second series of Shop Talk
The second series of Shop Talk Sessions will be hosted this coming Saturday, 4 June. It will also take place at Paul Roos Gymnasium’s much-loved Media Centre. Director Nina Swart (known for her work on ‘Temptation Island’, ‘Die Boekklub’ and ‘Fynskrif’) will also address young filmmakers on all things ‘Directing’. Her session will also be followed by a ‘Screenwriting’ Shop Talk Session by creative pair René and Corné van Rooyen. They are undoubtedly known for their exemplary work in, among others, the award-winning film, ‘Vaselinetjie’. Shop Talk Sessions kick off at 9am on Saturday.
The third and fourth series of Shop Talk Sessions will take place on the 11th and 18th of June between 9am and 3pm. It will cover topics such as camera and film, editing and animation. It will also include the making of music videos, music and film, sound production and foley, and finally, acting for the camera. Young adults who are interested in filmmaking and would like to attend these sessions can contact Luna Paige at media@paulroos.co.za.
