Schools That Rock asked Bianca Leighton, Head Girl of La Rochelle Girl’s High School, Paarl, a few questions.
Question: What do you look forward to most when the 2021 school year starts? I am really looking forward to having my whole grade back together again after a long holiday and to enjoy every moment onwith my peers. I want to make this year as memorable as possible for them, as it is our last year and I do not want anybody to look back at it in a few years’ time and regret not having made the most of it.
Question: Are there any changes or adjustments you would like to see happen at your school? I think it would be lovely if our school could put more emphasis on participation in cultural activities. Many of our learners take part in at least one sporting activity, but not all of our learners are involved in the many cultural activities that the school offers.
Question: If you had to make a statement to convince someone that your school is the right choice, what would that statement be? Something that I love about my school is that every girl is accepted for who she is without being judged. In order to achieve success in academics and various other aspects of the school, there needs to be discipline, and the Larries are disciplined. We also have supportive teachers who truly care about our well-being and who always offer a helping hand when it comes to schoolwork.
Question: Who would you consider to be your role model at your school? I am very fortunate to have many role models at my school since we have phenomenal female leaders. If I could mention a few it would be our principal, Ms Amanda Lochner, Mrs Lynette Neethling and Mrs Hannatjie Naudé, with whom the Student Council works closely. All three of these women are role models to me as they teach me what it means to lead with grace and not with force. They have taught me how to think on my feet and always to be prepared.
Question: Which sport activity offered at your school is your favourite? My favourite sport is netball. I have been playing it since I can remember. It helps me to stay active and I enjoy the social aspect of the sport too. Netball is also a great stress reliever.
Question: What is your favourite meal? My favourite dish is definitely nachos. It has the right combination of spiciness, crunchiness and flavour. How can one not love it?
Question: Which career choices are you considering after school? My dream is to become a Chartered Accountant. I have a passion for numbers and therefore I think I will definitely enjoy the career.
Question: Which university do you want to attend next year? I would love to study at Stellenbosch University or the University of Cape Town.
Question: Do you have a message for your fellow pupils for 2021? Even though we are entering into the 2021 school year with many uncertainties and many doubts, we can still make it the best year possible. But, we need to remain focused on our goals and to strive to be the best version of ourselves. You will miss 100% of the shots you do not take. With that said, do not be afraid to take risks to better yourself in the end. Grab 2021 with both hands!
