schoolsthatrockThe March school holidays means it is time for Rugby festivals. Glenwood travelled down to Cape Town to play in the Wynberg Rugby Festival before they take part in the 2019 Edition of the illustrious World Schools Festival to be held at Paul Roos Gymnasium.
In Glenwood’s first fixture they were up against the Mighty Red Army from KES. The intent was shown early on with both teams keeping possession and attacking the advantage line. KES drew first blood when they scored the opening try. Glenwood responded immediately with a beautiful try in true Glenwood fashion to put them right back into the game.
Glenwood continued their dominance throughout the half scoring 4 more tries, of which 2 came from handling errors made by the Red Army deep inside their 22m. Glenwood went into the break leading 33-10. The second half lived up to the expectation created in the first half.
KES scored 2 quick tries to reduce the lead, both tries from intercepts. KES crawled their way back into the game courtesy of handling errors from the Green Machine, but Glenwood hanged on for a well fought victory of 46-38. A true arm wrestle in the sense.
Glenwood’s next fixture was against San Isidro from Argentina. It was always going to be a tough battle, with the Argentines off a well-earned victory over Rondebosch Boys High. The boys from Argentina scored first after a couple of phases trying to find gaps in the Glenwood defence.
The intensity was poor, with both teams making unforced errors and losing possession. San Isidro scored 3 tries and Glenwood 2 in the first half with Glenwood leading 20-19. However, both teams would rather forget this half with its unforced errors and poor defence.
The second half turned out to be a battle of the boots as both teams relied heavily on their kickers to keep the scoreboard ticking over gradually. San Isidro took the lead early on.
Both teams kept the game in the balance until the very last minute where San Isidro was penalised for being offside at the ruck. Jordan Hendrikse stepped up and slotted the penalty to give Glenwood a glorious but nail-biting 33-31 victory.
Glenwood ended a very successful Wynberg Rugby Festival.
They will be moving along with the N2 up to Paul Roos Gimnasium to play John McGlashan College and Asia Pacific Dragons in the World Schools festival being held from 25 – 29 March.
