Kearsney College, Botha’s Hill KZN, is once again shining on the national stage. Its students are excelling in top-tier mathematics and history challenges across South Africa.

Mathematics Mastery

Three Kearsney boys — Thomas Schulze and Shavanth Chelladu (Grade 9), and Mukona Marageni (Grade 10) — have advanced to the final round of the South African Mathematical Olympiad. It takes place this week (31 July). This elite round also features the top 100 maths minds in the country.

Building on this academic momentum, 50 Kearsney mathematicians (26 juniors and 24 seniors) took part in the prestigious WITS International Maths Challenge. It is also renowned for its emphasis on critical thinking and complex problem-solving. The competition spans four tiers — from prep school to university level — and is now one of Africa’s largest mathematics events.

In addition to tens of thousands of participants continent-wide, only 200 finalists were chosen in each category. Kearsney impressed yet again, with nine students selected as finalists. Junior finalists include Aedan Dalton, Khaya Gxoyiya, Dru Mills, and Thomas Schulze. In the senior division, Shay Bagaria, Matthew Behrens, Benjamin Hancock, Mukona Marageni, and George Sykes will also represent the school in the finals this September.

Historical Excellence

Kearsney’s academic prowess isn’t limited to mathematics. In the recent Senior National History Olympiad, the school was named top institution in KwaZulu-Natal. Oliver Tubb was recognized as the province’s top performer.

Four learners earned gold certificates for ranking in the top 5% nationally: Oliver Tubb, Sphe Ndlovu, Max East, and Thomas Blomfield. Apart from this, Silver honours (top 10%) went to Adam Georgiadis and James Lubbe. Liam Botha, Thomas du Plessis, and Christopher Oellermann were also awarded bronze certificates for placing in the top 15%.

🌟 Kearsney’s achievements reflect a dynamic learning culture that nurtures both analytical and historical acumen. With a growing list of accolades, the College also continues to set the bar for academic excellence across disciplines.
