St Charles College, Pietermaritzburg, travelled to the outdoor courts of Clifton this last week and unfortunately it was the elements which dictated much of the game. With a howling wind in play, the game was limited to fast break points and an inside presence from the team’s big men. Outside shooting was severely affected and as a result, teams were able to sit in a tight zone for the majority of the game. Nonetheless, the Saints ran a good press defence which forced Clifton to make a number of quick turnovers which resulted in easy scores. On the offensive end, the bigger St Charles College team was able to gather a number of offensive rebounds which allowed them a number of put back opportunities. Although we did not see the best of either team due to the conditions, St Charles College managed to open up a comfortable lead early in the game which they never surrendered, eventually winning 45-21.
