On Friday, 26 July, St Charles College turned 144 years old and so earlier today the five schools which make up the College came together to celebrate this wonderful occasion!
To start off the birthday festivities, all the boys were addressed by the Principal of the College, Mr Allen van Blerk. This was followed by an inspirational speech by Mr Stewart Bradford, our Operations Manager and St Charles College Old Boy. Mr Bradford spoke to the boys about the history of the College and what it means to be a part of a school like St Charles College.
The Founder’s Day Dash was one of the highlights of the day, as boys from the Senior Primary, Middle School and Upper School sprinted down St Charles College’s drive. Well done to Garrett Frier who was the overall winner of the 2019 dash, missing the record by only a fraction of a second! After all the excitement, delicious donuts were on offer for the boys to enjoy after working up an appetite running and cheering on their friends!
St Charles College began as an idea in the mind of Bishop Charles Jolivet who was concerned about the number of young boys who roamed the streets of Pietermaritzburg without education and he was determined to do something about it. From these humble beginnings the College has grown to be where we are now. With over 800 boys on the bustling campus, ranging from 3 to 19 years old, we celebrate an incredible journey spanning 144 years.
Happy Birthday St Charles College!
