‘Wool in Art’ competition. Two of Union High School’s talented Art Club members, Joy Merifield and Lisa McEwan, have recently won prizes in the ‘Wool in Art’ competition. This event took place at the Karoo Winter Festival in Middelburg. It showcased the artistic prowess of youngsters from across the region.
In the senior primary division, Lisa McEwan was awarded second prize for her powerful charcoal rendition of a Karoo Ram. Her work also captivated the judges with its intricate detail and evocative representation of this iconic animal. Her work captured the essence of the Karoo landscape.
In the high school category, Joy Merifield’s beautiful pastel self-portrait with a lamb, also earned her a second-place finish. Her artwork, a delicate blend of realism and emotion, highlighted not only her technical skill but also her deep connection to the subject matter.
The Art Club sent twenty artworks to the festival. All the artworks were auctioned off to raise funds for drought relief. This collective effort not only showcased the talent within the school but also contributed to a meaningful cause. It demonstrates the learners’ commitment to their community.
Joy and Lisa each won R5000 for their outstanding efforts, along with an additional R10 000 for the school.
