Western Cape Chess.
On 16 and 17 September, Curro Durbanville’s U9, U11 and U13 mixed chess teams competed in the Western Cape Top Schools Chess Tournament in Caledon, at Swartberg Secondary School. This prestigious event pits the best schools in the province against each other over 5 rounds of chess, where matches could last up to 2.
After playing their hearts out against some very tough competition, all three teams came first in their age groups to be crowned the 2022 Western Cape Top Schools champions! What makes this even more impressive, is that even though a few individual chess matches were lost, all three teams won all 5 of their rounds.
A lot of Curro Durbanville’s players also received the individual board prizes for the day.
Board No. | Under 9 Team (Board prize winners in green) | Under 11 Team (Board prize winners in blue) | Under 13 Team (Board prize winners in yellow) |
1 | Tristan Meder | Janko Weideman | James Wilson |
2 | Jesse Donker | Jordan Braaf | Chase Salimu |
3 | Callan Manning | Loghan Stander | Logan Priestley |
4 | Dimitri Van Wyk | Emlyn Wilson | Dawid Murray |
5 | Ayden James | Christopher Russell | Judah Ellappa |
6 | Lihann Nieuwoudt | Liam Priestley | Mila Snyman |
The school would also like to thank Ryan Huesmann, Hannah van Heerden and Declan Olkers, for their part in our U13 team’s continued success. Even though they could not take part in Caledon, they were instrumental in the journey to get the school to this point.
Curro Durbanville is beyond proud of Coach Reuben and his players for these incredible results.
