Western Cape Chess. Curro Durbanville dominates Western Cape Chess. All four Curro Durbanville Teams qualifies for Nationals at the Top Schools tournament.

In a remarkable display of chess mastery, Curro Durbanville has left an indelible mark on the Western Cape Chess Top Schools event on 2 and 3 September. All four of the school’s teams qualifying for the upcoming National Top Schools competition taking place later this year. Under the guidance of Coach Reuben Salimu, the learners also showcased their exceptional skills and teamwork.

Curro Durbanville’s results at the Regional Top Schools event in Worcester this past weekend was nothing short of extraordinary:

1. Under 9 Team: Silver

Callan Manning – Won the board prize for best board 1

2. Under 13 Team: Gold

  • Chase Salimu – Won the board prize for best board 1
  • Jordan Braaf – Won the board prize for best board 3
  • Mila Snyman – Won the board prize for best board 4
  • Liam Priestley – Won the board prize for best board 6

3. Under 15 Team: Silver

4. Under 18 Girls Team: Gold

  • Amahle Zenzile – Won the board prize for best board 1
  • Zente Palmer – Won the board prize for best board 2
  • Trinity van Beeck – Won the board prize for best board 3
  • Caitlyn Olkers – Won the board prize for best board 4
  • Amanda Pretorius – Won the board prize for best board 5

Coach Reuben Salimu’s mentorship and coaching prowess were also pivotal in achieving these impressive outcomes. Salimu, a seasoned chess coach, has been instrumental in honing the talents of Curro Durbanville’s young chess prodigies. His dedication and strategic guidance have undoubtedly played a significant role in the success of the school’s chess teams.

These remarkable achievements have earned Curro Durbanville a well-deserved spot in the upcoming National Top Schools competition, scheduled to take place in Gqeberha this December. The school community, parents, and supporters are all eagerly looking forward to witnessing how the chess teams continue to excel on the national stage.
