All around the world, technology is being used to help create positive change. This term – in Technology – Union High School’s Grade 7’s are learning all about how technology can be used to help improve the lives of refugees and displaced persons.
In the accompanying photos, the Grade 7’s are experimenting with one of the methods used to try and make materials waterproof.
They covered a piece of cotton with wax by rubbing a candle over it and then melted the wax into the cloth by ironing it between two sheets of newspaper.
After doing this they tested the cloth under running water to determine if the cloth was now waterproof or water-resistant.
They found that the cloth initially held out the water, but if the pressure from the water was too great, or if too much water gathered on top of the cloth, the water would start to drip through.
They have now been tasked to find out if there are other ways of waterproofing cloth that might be more successful.
