Tunisia Science Festival. South African scientists from St Dominics Newcastle to shine on the global stage at Tunisia Science Festival. Two brilliant young scientists from St Dominics Newcastle, Hamzah Ismail and Vibhav Ramdas, are set to showcase their groundbreaking research on an international platform!
Hamzah Ismail and Vibhav Ramdas, both Grade 12 learners and Eskom Expo International Science Fair Gold medallists, have been selected to represent South Africa at the prestigious International Festival of Engineering, Science and Technology (I-FEST²) in Tunisia from 21 to 27 March 2025.
Their outstanding projects in Environmental Science and Computer Science earned them this opportunity after a rigorous selection by a panel of academics and industry professionals at the Eskom Expo.
They will also be accompanied on their journey by Dr Kenneth Kaunda Regional Science Fair Director, Sethato Lydia Maputle.
Pioneering Research with Real-World Impact
Hamzah Ismail’s project is Revolutionising Construction with Eco-Friendly Fire-Retardant Plastic Bricks. Hamzah’s research explores a sustainable solution to plastic pollution by repurposing waste plastic into durable, fire-retardant bricks. His innovation could also transform modern construction, making it more environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and safer. With further development, this technology has the potential to be scaled up for global use, offering a practical approach to reducing plastic waste while revolutionising the building industry.
Vibhav Ramdas – AI-Powered Road Maintenance for Safer Cities
Vibhav’s project leverages object detection technology to improve road maintenance and traffic safety. His innovative system identifies road issues efficiently, potentially enhancing infrastructure upkeep and preventing accidents. The project’s multidisciplinary nature and real-world applications also make it a strong contender for international recognition.
Eskom Champions Youth Innovation
Ms Mologadi Motshele, Acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, praised the young scientists:
“Through the Eskom Expo, learners are encouraged to tackle real-world challenges with scientific inquiry and innovation. Hamzah and Vibhav’s research not only addresses crucial issues like plastic pollution and road safety but also contributes to a more sustainable future. Eskom is proud to support initiatives that nurture young talent and drive meaningful change.”
Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, emphasised the significance of this achievement: “These exceptional young minds are flying the South African flag high, demonstrating the incredible potential of youth-driven innovation. Their participation in I-FEST² highlights South Africa’s growing scientific talent and serves as an inspiration to future generations.”
A bright future for South African Science
As Hamzah and Vibhav prepare to take the global stage, they not only represent their school and the Eskom Expo but also stand as ambassadors for South Africa’s innovative spirit. Their research proves that young minds can drive change, shaping a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
