At Grantleigh Schools in KwaZulu-Natal, Grade 11 Natural Sciences learners recently traded their textbooks for an outdoor experiment. They blended science with culinary creativity. As part of their practical investigation into the greenhouse effect and heat trapping, students built and tested solar cookers—ingenious devices that transform sunlight into heat energy.
The solar ovens were loaded in the morning with an eclectic mix of ingredients: potatoes, carrots, instant noodles, and even cake batter. By the final period, anticipation ran high as the students unveiled their solar-powered feast. The noodles and cake emerged as unexpected standouts. It was cooked to perfection and greeted with wide-eyed amazement and joy.
This sunny experiment not only reinforced scientific concepts. It also gave learners a taste of sustainable innovation… with a sweet finish.
