Students in Global Trade – Grantleigh Schools in the Rice Game

Students in Global Trade. 🌍 Grantleigh Students Dive into Global Trade with Interactive “Rice Game.”

Grade 11 Geography students at Grantleigh Schools, a Curro Select institution, recently immersed themselves in the intricate world of international trade. They went through a dynamic classroom simulation known as the “Rice Game.”

In this hands-on activity, students were paired up and randomly assigned countries. Each with a designated supply of rice—the essential resource their “population” needed to survive. The challenge? To manage their resources, negotiate trades, as well as secure enough rice to prevent widespread hunger within their borders.

To mirror real-world economic disparities, more developed nations were granted extra “monopoly money.” The reason is to leverage in negotiations. While less affluent countries had to rely on ingenuity and diplomacy to meet their needs. As the game progressed, students crafted strategies, forged alliances, and—true to global politics—some even engaged in covert “under-the-table” deals to stay afloat.

In a surprising twist, Australia emerged as the most successful country. Mauritius was close behind—defying expectations and showcasing the power of strategic thinking.

Far more than a classroom game, the Rice Game offered students a vivid, experiential understanding of global trade dynamics, economic inequality, and the delicate balance of international relations.

“At Grantleigh Schools, we believe in learning that goes beyond textbooks. Activities like this equip our students with critical thinking, negotiation, and problem-solving skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom,” said the Geography Department.
