Kearsney College’s 1st team water polo squad delivered a commanding and memorable performance at the prestigious St Stithians Stayers Tournament—one of South Africa’s premier schoolboy water polo events. Competing against 20 top schools, the team battled through a demanding draw to secure a well-earned fifth-place finish.
🌊 Pool Play: Grit and Early Momentum
Placed in a challenging group, Kearsney launched their campaign with impressive wins over Grey High School (12–8) and St Andrews (8–5). Despite a narrow 8–10 loss to a strong Affies side and a hard-fought 5–5 draw against tournament hosts St Stithians, the team finished third in their pool—setting up a high-stakes crossover clash with local rivals Hilton College.
Knockout Drama: Rising to the Challenge
In a fiercely contested match, Kearsney overcame Hilton with a decisive 9–5 victory, advancing to the quarter-finals. There, they faced group winners Rondebosch. Kearsney surged to an early 3–0 lead, but Rondebosch rallied to level the score at 6–6 heading into a tense final quarter. Ultimately, Rondebosch edged ahead in the closing minutes to win 9–6.
Bouncing Back: A Statement Win
Undeterred, the boys from Botha’s Hill regrouped for their next crossover match against Hilton CollegeConstantia. Displaying exceptional teamwork and intensity, Kearsney dominated the game with a resounding 19–9 victory—earning a spot in the 5th/6th place playoff against water polo powerhouse St John’s College.
Finishing Strong: A Fitting Finale
In a thrilling conclusion to their tournament run, Kearsney saved one of their finest performances for last. With skill, determination, and character on full display, they defeated St John’s to clinch fifth place overall.
Individual Excellence
The tournament also featured a standout individual achievement: Thomas Aylward was named to the All-Star Tournament Team—a testament to his talent, dedication, and impact throughout the weekend.
