St Charles College vs St Davids, Saturday 16 June rugby & hockey

St Charles College had a successful Old Boys Weekend, starting on Friday afternoon with the Prep 1st XV playing Bishops and then a full round of hockey and rugby fixtures on Saturday against St Davids from Johannesburg. The biggest crowd of the season gathered around Old Orchards field and they were entertained by a St Charles College brand of rugby that is skillful and exciting to watch. St Davids opened the scoring with an early penalty and then the next twenty minutes was a tight affair with no change in score although the hosts had the larger share of possession and territory. It was the Saints pivot, Braden Muir, who opened the scoring for the hosts with a try in the 28th minute. St Davids replied with a try of their own, also converted, and took the lead into half time, 10-7.

St Charles College continued to enjoy the lion’s share of possession and while the finishing may have let them down in the first half, the Saints finished really well after the changeover, scoring four tries to the visitors’ one. It was 30 minutes of excellent rugby and just reward for this hardworking group of boys and coaches. The adage, “you have to earn the right to go wide” was true for the Saints who showed solid basics combined with well-coached shape, resulting in Luke Adam, Prince Mazeka and JJ Foord all getting across the line. It was left to front ranker, Mpumelelo ‘Cookie’ Sithole, to score the final try – a tight head props dream – running a line that most centres would be proud of, he carved through the defensive line untouched and galloped at least 14 metres to dive in next to the poles. The conversion was soon followed by the final whistle, a great way for St Charles College to end their winter season.
