Having spent time with the Scrummies boys near the end of the first term, Mr Nel’s Grade 9 English class were then given a challenge to, as groups, produce 4 children’s books. There were some parameters for the boys to adhere to, which included that the writing be: completed in iambic pentameter, written in rhyming quatrains, child friendly, and contain some sort of moral or life lesson. The boys rose to the occasion and produced work of which they can be proud. Not many boys can claim that they are an author of a book, let alone an illustrator too!
The final proof in the pudding was another visit to the Pre-Primary School, where the boys were able to test out their stories on the most honest audience of all – the actual boys of Scrummies. The little guys were spellbound! It was hard to tell who had more fun here… the pre-schoolers, the Grade 9s, or the teachers! – Mr Nick Nel
