The Saints First XI have competed against the very best in the country this year, and performed brilliantly; however, it has been tough going this term whereby they are getting into winning positions every weekend and not finishing the job. Michaelhouse on the weekend was no different. The Saints won the toss and batted first on a dry pitch, ploughing their way to 196 off 50 overs. This was largely thanks to Chaise Botha, 47 not out, and Steve Scott, 37 and their superb 9th wicket partnership. Other notable scores belonged to Nathan Lunderstedt, 30, and Jason Login, 29.  It was a wicket where you never felt in and these contributions were fundamental to what should have proved to be enough. Michaelhouse had other ideas. The visitors were poor in execution with the new ball and 32 extras meant that St Charles College never got into any rhythm. The Michaelhouse run rate never dropped below 4 and runs came too easily to the Michaelhouse batsman. A three wicket win perhaps does not do justice to how close the game was as one wicket in the dying stages would have changed everything at the death. All in all, defending has been one of our main strengths year and not to defend 196 on wicket that was breaking up and taking lots of turn is extremely disappointing.  Congratulations to Michaelhouse on a great win and for hosting the Saints cricket teams.
