Saturday saw the return of the eagerly anticipated City Derby. The basketball game earlier in the year was played in front of a full house and ended in dramatic fashion with Maritzburg College claiming a one-point victory. With that loss still fresh in the memory of the St Charles College team, they travelled to College with something to prove. The game started well for the Saints, through excellent play from James Laynes and Bradley Harris, and they built a comfortable eleven-point lead. The second half, however, belonged to College with both Laynes and Harris sitting on the bench with foul trouble and a barrage of successful three-point shots, College took the lead by one point with under two minutes to play. With the pressure on, the return of the two big men for Saints saw Laynes get a huge offensive putback to give the lead back to St Charles College, who were then able to hang on to the lead through some clutch free throw shooting from Captain Nkosinathi Dlamini and Lihle Manyatsi. The electric atmosphere brought out the best in the well-coached Saints team who executed accurately in the final stages to finish victors 59-54 in another hugely entertaining City Derby.
