On Wednesday, 26 July, St Charles College turns 142 years old, and so last Friday morning, the five schools which make up the College came together to celebrate this wonderful occasion! To start off the birthday festivities, all the boys were addressed by SCC old boy and current staff member, Mr Tim Parker, as well as by the Principal of the College, Mr Allen van Blerk, who spoke about the history of not only the College but of the much loved Founder’s Day Dash.
The Founder’s Day Dash was one of the highlights of the day, as boys from the Senior Primary, Middle School and Upper School sprinted down St Charles College’s drive. Well done to Jason Bell from the Upper School who was the overall winner of the 2017 dash! After all the excitement, an incredible cake, donated by Zee Hoosen, was cut by the College’s Principal, Mr Allen van Blerk, Deputy Principal, Mr Graham Stewart-Burger, member of the board, Mr Wayne Beaumont and head boy, Tehan Martinson. There were also delicious donuts on offer for the boys to enjoy after working up an appetite running and cheering on their friends!
St Charles College began as an idea in the mind of Bishop Charles Jolivet who was concerned about the number of young boys who roamed the streets of Pietermaritzburg without education and he was determined to do something about it. From these humble beginnings the College has grown to be where we are now. With over 800 boys on the bustling campus, ranging from 3 to 19 years old, we celebrate an incredible journey spanning 142 years. Happy Birthday St Charles College!
