The 2018/2019 Rowing Season ended on a phenomenal note with the St Andrew’s School for Girls rowing team taking second place overall at the South African School’s Rowing Championships this past weekend.
We want to congratulate our rowers on their perseverance and fighting spirit, which they maintained throughout the full three days of racing, even in the debilitating heatwave at Roodeplaat Dam.
The overall Championship trophies were awarded as follows to the respective crews in their categories: U14s – 3rd place, U15s – 1st place, U16s – 2nd place, and our Opens took 1st place.
Our Senior Opens were cheered by all the rowers as they got off the water after finishing their last race for the school, as they congratulated them for their many years of commitment, and bid them farewell from the sport in a schooling capacity. They have set high standards for the other crews, leading by shining example; and they will be sorely missed. Our sincere gratitude to the Senior Opens for their long-service in the sport; and to their parents for their eager, enthusiastic and exemplary level of support and encouragement.
Our First Quad entertained us in the Finals by providing one of the most exciting finishes of girls’ racing in many years. Despite the disappointment of narrowly missing first place by 00:00:01, the girls and coaches can be very proud of their achievements and sportsmanship.
