St Andrew’s School for Girls: Celebrating our Class of 2020

My name is Aatikah Abbas. I am in Athlone Grade 12. I started at St Andrew’s when I was in Grade 8.
My fondest memory at St Andrew’s is of my first week of school. I was extremely nervous for high school, especially a whole new school. Although I was nervous and scared, all the girls were very friendly, and I couldn’t help but feel at home. Within the first week of school, a grade 12 and grade 8 camp was set up, and everyone got to know each other better. After that, I couldn’t wait for the camp with me and my Grade 8 buddy. I finally got to experience the camp again at the beginning of this year, and it will be something I never forget.
St Andrew’s has taught me that my best is the best I can do, and I shouldn’t let anyone tell me otherwise. St Andrew’s has also taught me basic life skills that I never thought I would ever learn at school, such as table settings and event planning. The greatest skill I’ve gained is independence.
Words of advice that I would give to the younger girls at St Andrew’s would be to take things slowly. Sometimes you will feel as if certain tasks are impossible and that you will never be able to do it, but I assure you that you can. Things will obviously get hectic at some point, but as cliche as it sounds, your teachers are really there for you. Tell them how you feel, and they will help you get through it. Just be honest with your teachers, they really don’t bite. The teachers at this school are truly the best.
After leaving St Andrew’s, I plan on studying engineering, as well as Mathematical sciences. I want to study at the University of Pretoria, and hope to someday open up my own Maths and English tutoring company. Aside from that, I hope to also achieve my Grade 8 Violin Practical.
