Schools That Rock asked a few questions to Samukelo Mbatha, Head Boarder Prefect of Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School.
Question: How do you experience the influence of the Covid19 virus on our country?
The COVID-19 virus has impacted the flow of the economy in ways we would have never imagined. The closing of schools has taken a large toll on students especially the matrics of 2020. Recovering from this pandemic will be a great challenge but I am grateful to have my country’s future in the hands of such a great leader, our president Cyril Ramaphosa. He has been handling the matter in such an incredible manner and for that I am thankful.
Question: Do you think the virus will influence future education at schools? Will schools approach education in a new way?
We understand that schools had to close in order to keep everyone safe, which has resulted in a loss of about a month of teaching time. This has forced schools to think of more innovative ways to educate their learners while trying to keep them safe in the comfort of their own homes. However, I do think that the changes that have occurred in teaching methods will be long lasting. Most schools are now operating using technology. I think that this is fantastic as our generation is very technologically orientated and using technology might be a very good idea to keep students engaged in school work.
Question: How are you planning to still reach your goals for your last year at school?
COVID-19 has caused the world to go into panic mode however, I think being South African has helped us to deal with the pandemic in a different way. South Africans always find light in the darkest tunnels and are able to keep their spirits high even in tough times. I will wear the South African spirit on my sleeve. For me, I think that having a positive mind set and attitude is key to any success. I plan on reaching my goals by staying positive and continuing to work hard.
Question: What and where are you going to study after school?
After completing matric I plan on continuing my studies in Cape Town, specifically a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies. Saving the environment is something that I am very passionate about and I look forward to the new challenge.
