It is a priviledge for Schools That Rock to introduce Esther Makumbe, captain of Edgemead’s Girls Table Tennis team, to the visitors to our website.
“I started playing sport at the age of 8. I play both singles and doubles.
I was captain of the tennis team at school and still captain in robotics.
I go to the gym regularly where I would hit either arms and back/ abs/ legs. I also workout at home. I do combined HIIT exercises which include 50 squats, skip rope, weighted lunges, crunches and a sprint around the estate where we live in morning and at night.
I also play hockey and tennis. I have played in both but rather appreciate individual because you get to work on your skills set and have the opportunity to receive feedback right away and that gives you the chance to constantly self evaluate and pivot.
As a captain I feel I need to lead the team and make sure we have a strong connection to make sure we display good sportsmanship and the school values when we play.
Sport is not just a way to stay fit, I think it’s a good balance to have in life. With that said, I would love to play table tennis professionally and represent SA. One day I want to follow my uncle’s footsteps in playing worldwide.
