Schools Cricket. On Saturday, 1 February, Kearsney travelled to play KZN’s most in-form cricket team, Northwood High School. The hosts elected to bowl first in very overcast and humid conditions.
Northwood’s opening bowlers started well through Jamie Wimble (2/28 in 8 overs) and Luke Allen (3/32 in 9 overs). The outfield was quite heavy and scoring was slow, but Kearsney absorbed a lot of pressure and made their way to 57/2 off 25 overs at morning tea. After tea, however, Kearsney looked to up the run rate through Keegan de Jager who made an impressive 70 runs, included 4 fours and 3 sixes, and Cole Young with close to a run a ball 42. Nicholas Comrie came in near the end and his quick fire 20 off 23 balls propelled his team to 178/9 in their 50 overs.
The hosts’ strong batting lineup were immediately under pressure when the in-form Litha Gonya struck in his first over to remove David de Bruyn for 0 and Tuswa Phetha for 5. Comrie then applied pressure from the other side, taking two important wickets, and the spin bowling pair of Rivan Moodley (8 overs 2/9) and Matthew Gorrie (5 overs 2/8) meant the hosts’ chase was always under pressure; and they eventually crumbled to 82 all out. Morgan Jones showed some fight making 36 runs off 49 balls, but his efforts weren’t supported, and Kearsney ran out victors by 96 runs.
