Schools Boat Race. SA Schools Boat Race (Part 2)

Schools Boat Race. The SASRU BOAT RACE takes place on a suitable Saturday as close to the first weekend, as possible in December. This falls early in the school holidays of all provincial and independent schools – towards the middle of the South African rowing season when schools’ should be nearing the end of the endurance-training and strength-training part of the season, before the 2000m sprints season which culminates in the Schools’ Rowing Championships in March. Seventeen Schools are participating at the 2024 Schools Boat Race taking place on 6 and 7 December on the Kowie River in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape for schools’ First Eights and First Quads.

Meet the crews:

Jeppe High School for Boys:

Jeppe High School for Boys delivered a strong performance last year, finishing in 6th place. With a proud legacy in sports, this Johannesburg-based school is ready to take on the Kowie River once again. This year, the Jeppe crew is determined to climb the rankings and leave a lasting mark. Let’s cheer them on! Watch Jeppe race on 6 & 7 December.

Germiston High School Boys:

Germiston High School put in a great effort last year, finishing in 12th place, and they’re eager to continue their journey in rowing this year. Based in Gauteng, this crew is newer to the sport but has shown tremendous growth, enthusiasm, and potential. Can they continue to progress and push past their competitors in 2024? We’re excited to see what they’ll achieve!

Holy Rosary School:

Holy Rosary School finished 4th place in 2023 and is determined to improve on that this year. Based in Gauteng, this crew has been working tirelessly to refine their skills and challenge the top spots. With a strong sense of team spirit, they’re ready to push for the podium in 2024. Can they rise to the top?

St Dunstan’s College Girls:

We’re thrilled to welcome the St Dunstan’s College girls’ rowing crew back to the South African Schools Boat Race after a few years away! This talented team from Benoni is ready to make a strong comeback on the Kowie River. With their determination and passion for the sport, these rowers are prepared to give it their all and showcase their hard work. Let’s cheer on St Dunstan’s as they return to the water and aim for success in Port Alfred! Welcome back, St Dunstan’s College Girls!

Bishops Diocesan College:

Bishops finished in 13th place last year, but this crew from Cape Town is back, ready to show they’ve got the fire to rise up the rankings. Known for their strong sports programme, Bishops is focused on improving their performance on the Kowie River this year. With solid teamwork and dedication, they’ll be looking to make their presence known at the event! Watch Bishops race on 6 & 7 December.

St Andrew’s School for Girls:

St Andrew’s School for Girls finished 2nd place last year, and they’re back with an even stronger crew in 2024. Based in Gauteng, this crew is known for their competitive spirit, strong work ethic, and consistent training. They are ready to take on the competition and improve on last year’s result. Will they clinch the top spot this year?
