Schoolboys Hockey. Grit, Glory, and a Late Comeback: Kearsney Stuns St Stithians in Founders Weekend Thriller
Kearsney’s Founders Weekend clash was always destined to test the mettle of their young side, facing off against a red-hot St Stithians unit boasting a stellar season. And within minutes, that test was real. The visitors fired in an early goal, immediately throwing Kearsney onto the back foot.
St Stithians dominated the first chukka, relentlessly pressing and threatening to widen the gap. But Kearsney’s defence, resilient and composed, dug in to weather the storm, keeping the deficit to a single goal deep into the match.
Then came the spark. Early in the final chukka, Keegan de Jager seized a chance and buried a penalty corner, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 50th minute and electrifying the home crowd.
St Stithians responded swiftly, converting a penalty stroke following a contentious foul in the D — regaining the lead and seemingly sealing their fate as victors.
But Kearsney had other plans.
In a gripping final flourish, Aaron Blackburn expertly deflected a ball at the far post to equalize once more. Then, in a moment of magic and mayhem, Ata Mazibuko capitalized on a rebound to score the winner — a goal that sent the Kearsney supporters into raptures.
It was a match of courage, composure, and a refusal to back down. Kearsney’s come-from-behind victory wasn’t just a win — it was a statement.
