Schoolboy Hockey. St Charles College vs. St David’s Marist Inanda – A Battle of Grit and Growth.
In their final fixture of the season, St Charles College welcomed St David’s Marist Inanda to the KZN capital, as the Johannesburg visitors made the long journey south. From the opening whistle, St Charles asserted themselves with intent, dominating both possession and territory. Slick build-up play and several promising chances followed, yet the elusive breakthrough goal remained just out of reach.
St David’s, though under pressure, never panicked. Their defensive structure held firm, anchored by a standout performance from their goalkeeper. Then came the twist. Against the run of play late in the first chukka, the visitors broke away clinically to snatch a 1–0 lead — a pivotal moment that shifted the game’s momentum.
Structure gave way to desperation
The hosts responded with urgency, but the scoreboard began to weigh on their shoulders. In their eagerness to equalise, St Charles lost some composure, and structure gave way to desperation. Still, they kept pushing — only to meet a wall of defiance. St David’s back four, goalkeeper, and set-piece unit were resolute, soaking up wave after wave of attack with courage and concentration.
As frustration crept in, gaps opened at the back. St David’s capitalised ruthlessly, adding two finely taken second-half goals to seal an impressive 3–0 result. Though both teams fought on until the final whistle, no further goals came.
Credit to St David’s for a disciplined, efficient, and impressive display — and gratitude for making the trip to Pietermaritzburg to close the season in true sporting spirit.
For St Charles, this result will sting, but it also serves as a vital lesson in resilience, composure, and unity under pressure — qualities that lie at the heart of our school’s identity. As ever, we honour the effort of our players and look forward to the next chapter in our enduring rivalry with St David’s. Reported by Head Coach, Matthew Coombes
“To the faithful one, a certain reward.”
