SA Open Chess Tournament. Tivek Subramoney, a Grade 7 learner from Curro Online recently placed 17th out of 160 players in the junior section of the South African open chess tournament. His weekly chess sessions with the school’s chess coach fueled his enthusiasm for playing chess competitively. He met his coaches in person for the first time at this event.
‘I would highly recommend joining and feeling as on top of the world as I do, when I am behind a chess board. It is exhilarating’, Tivek said. ‘I am beyond excited to participate in future tournaments and hopefully, become a pro, which is my ultimate dream.’
Tivek entered the SA Open Chess Tournament which has three different sections: The B Section, the Junior Section and the Blitz section. Over the nine days of the competition, he pushed himself to new limits. The hours were long and exhausting and the days required immense focus and concentration. In addition, he had to keep his opponents on their toes with smart and original moves that would leave them speechless.
‘For me, it was such an amazing learning curve and life-changing experience. I won some games and lost some too. Nevertheless, I also learned the art of staying calm in situations where all hope was lost. I also learned how to overcome any challenge thrown my way. I saw that persistence and faith are the keys to success.’
