Remembrance Day. On 11 November people all around the world observe Remembrance Day. This is to honour the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, particularly since WW1. In solidarity, St Charles College has continued in this custom. They set aside the busyness of the day to remember and honour the fallen. They especially give thought to those St Charles College Old Boys who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
St Charles College Head Boy, Nicholas Oldfield, addressed staff, students and guests, underscoring the significance of the day. The thrust of Nicholas’ message encompassed the concept of remembering.
Each of the Deputy Head Prefects highlighted aspects of the ceremony, emphasizing the significance of the day. Members of the Chamber Choir sang a stirring version of When I survey the wonderous Cross. It was written by the well-known hymn writer Isaac Watts. Kanyinsola Bankole and Thingo Makhathini respectively played the two calls, the Last Post and the Reveille. During the silence They paused to remember those who gave their lives in war, and with gratitude lay a wreath for those St Charles College boys who offered their lives in these wars. The setting-free of doves, symbolizing the release of our loved ones, capped a meaningful Remembrance Day service for St Charles College.
“We are grateful to have had members of the South African Legion participating in the ceremony who lay a wreath in memory of fallen comrades. – Mr Ross Ducasse (St Charles College Chaplain)”.
