Pinnacle of Youth Athletics. The High School Teams are Announced for Curro Podium National Finals!
The wait is finally over! Independent school group Curro Holdings is delighted to unveil the teams, for the Pinnacle of Youth Athletics, that have also secured their well-deserved place in the Curro Podium National Finals. It takes place on Saturday, 17 February 2024, at Pretoria’s Pilditch Stadium.
Billed as the most prestigious high school athletics event in Southern Africa, the grand finale is scheduled to take place one day after the inaugural Curro Podium Primary Schools event, at the same venue.
The national finals also promise to be a spectacle of athletic brilliance, featuring over 2200 of South Africa’s most talented young athletes from 75 schools. The journey leading to this heart-pounding event began with the inaugural Curro Podium meeting earlier this year, followed by subsequent events in the North and South regions.
A battle of two regions
In September, young sports stars from the North also delivered a thrilling performance at Pilditch Stadium, with Chris Swanepoel, Megan Nieman (Die Hoërskool Menlopark), Hencu Lamberts (Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool), and Matodz Ndou (Curro Hazeldean High School) each achieving a perfect score of 1000 points on the ASA points system.
Their triumphs were swiftly followed by an equally electrifying event in the South, which happened at the Dal Josefat Stadium in Paarl in October 2023. The event also saw outstanding displays from Brandon-Lee Bothma (Bellville High School), Mia Wilson (La Rochelle High School), Liam van Rooyen (Paarl Gimnasium), and Chris-Mari Nel (Vredendal High School). These cohorts of athletic elite will now compete on the track and field for the ultimate prize – being crowned a national high school champion.
“The Curro Podium National Finals are the culmination of months of hard work, skill, and passion. We congratulate all the qualifying athletes and schools who have shown exceptional talent in the previous meetings. This grand finale is a celebration of the relentless pursuit of excellence in both individual and team sports and we cannot wait to witness sporting brilliance and hopefully, the breaking of a few athletic records,” says Cindy van der Merwe, Portfolio Manager at Curro Sport.

Expanding to Primary Schools
Curro is also proud to announce the inauguration of the Curro Podium Primary Schools event, taking place on Friday, 16 February 2024, again at the iconic Pilditch Athletics Stadium. This new addition to the Podium series will cater to budding primary school athletes aged between 7-13 years to solidify the independent school group’s commitment to fostering sporting excellence from the grassroots level.
Mirroring its high school counterpart, the event offers a platform for young talents to shine in various track and field events, with learners competing for individual and team honours. All the high school podium meetings, including the national finals, and primary school event, have earned the stamp of approval from Athletics SA (ASA) and received the full backing of Athletics Gauteng North (AGN).
The hugely successful high school meetings have enjoyed tremendous turnout and participation, and the primary school leg is expected to be no different.
