PIETERMARITZBURG Girls’ High School first hockey team ended the 2017 season on a high, finishing second on the log just behind St Anne’s DSG, after a tough start to the season this year.

Although many challenges were faced by the girls this season, at the top of the list was having to adapt to their new coach, Joel Barron following the departure of Taryn de Winnaar who coached the team for many years.

For the first time since its inception six years ago, the GHS first hockey team did not make it to the finals of the KwaZulu-Natal SPAR Hockey Tournament and finished behind St John’s DSG. GHS participated in the annual St Mary’s DSG hockey league and gained much experience and grew as a team.

The first team played against all the A-league schools as well as Bethlehem Voortrekker, Wartburg and King Edward High School. Of the seven matches played, GHS won four (Howick, Voortrekker, Epworth and Treverton College), drew two (The Wykeham Collegiate and St John’s DSG) and only lost against St Anne’s DSG.

Although the end of the season means saying goodbye to talented players including captain Nandi Ngubane, vice-captain Jacquie Minnaar, Noki Nyathi, and goalkeeper Caitlin Grant, there are a number of young and exciting players that will be a force to reckon with in the future.

GHS are also proud to announce that 19 hockey players have been selected to play in KZN school hockey teams;
